Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens
The Garden was founded in 1982, but has been a popular venue for outings since as early on as the 1800s. The indigenous landscape is Rocky Highveld Grassland, which comprises a mosaic of grassland and savanna, with dense bush found in kloofs and along streams. There are over 600 naturally occurring plant species to be found here, which covers 300 hectares of open land. Together with over 200 bird species, the Garden is home to an abundance of wildlife, including reptiles and other small mammals, such as antelope and jackal. Visitors have access to some excellent walking trails that run through the garden, as well as the Eagle’s Fare restaurant, the Random Harvest Nursery and the Isitaya Gift and Book Shop which are open daily. Entrance fees are R18 for adults, R7 for students and R5 for scholars, with children under 6 free and senior citizens free on Tuesdays. On Sundays, everyone can enjoy a picnic while relaxing in the wonderful surroundings and enjoying a concert.
Florida Lake
Roodepoort is home to a number of interesting attractions, such as Florida Lake, which caters for a variety of recreational tastes. There are hordes of waterfowl that populate the lake and an adjacent bird sanctuary ensures that the area has excellent bird watching opportunities. With an adventure park for the kids, a putt-putt course and an Olympic size pool, it’s no wonder that those who buy property in Roodepoort find Florida Lake such a popular spot for a family outing. There is a Yacht Club found here, as well as miniature steam engines in the park itself.
Kloofendal Nature Reserve
The Kloofendal Nature Reserve is found in the northwestern Highveld and boasts 120 bird species, as well as a variety of indigenous plant life. There is a stone amphitheatre here that is used for open air events, with two circular walking trails that take visitors past the old Confidence Reef mine shaft, as well as a dam and other geological and botanical sites of interest. There is a bird hide located at the small dam on the reserve and this is definitely worth a visit. The wildlife tends to be on the smaller side, but is surprisingly varied, with many tree species also making the reserve home.
Kromdraai
Now this part of Roodepoort is certainly worth a visit, as it caters for a broad spectrum of recreational tastes. Bill Harrops Balloon Safaris are located in this area, not to mention the Brookwood Estate Trout Farm and the opportunity to take part in guided horse trails. A trip to the Rhino and Lion Nature Reserve located here is definitely something to enthrall all members of the family.
